Verified Purchase. We had to buy this book for school. It was frustrating because there were a lot of errors. For some that would be a good thing because you learn but trying to figure out the error from other sources.
When you’re under a deadline to get something turned in, it’s not a good thing. There were also referenced files that were missing or found in a folder from a later chapter. Overall it’s a great learning tool. All the files they provide on the DVD are great for learning. They provide a before and after for each lesson to make it easier to figure out what you did wrong. It’s a really great reference book as well. I find myself referencing quite a bit and I will continue to use it after I’m finished my class.
The last time I used 3D Studio was more than a decade ago, so I needed something to bring me up to speed. This book meets my needs. This book does not teach you 3ds Max but gives a good reference of the features with demo projects. I felt the book was written backwards with animation first and building objects and texturing in different order.
I am taking an online course on 3ds Max and the course first start with interface, primitives, modifiers, and then texturing. The animation portion was mentioned later after you have the knowledge on how to create something.
This book needs its chapters to be rearrange a bit to make things flow more logically–you shouldn’t have to access further back into the book to know how to texture something.
Maybe I should have given this book a higher rating but part of a good book should be on the flow of things. I bought this book with the hopes it would have a strong few chapters on rigging, creating controllers, and skinning characters, but I’ve found those characters it to be extremely generalized. On the brighter side the rest of the content in this book seems solid from what I’ve thumbed through.

I found this book really useful, it’s really clear, there are many tutorials and examples and almost every option in the program is covered in good detail. If it had more descriptions about how 3D graphics and the rendering tecniques used in the program actually work at a conceptual level of course I’m not talking about explaining algorithms, mathematical things or anything like that, this is not the book for it , it would be perfect for me.
Report abuse. This book is a really great reference book. You get to a stage where you have learnt the basics but the program is so vast that it will take years to understand it fully, this is where this book works well, it has a great index and is easy to find tutorials and descriptions of tools. I have read the whole chapter on lighting and it is a really great learning tool too with some excellent tutorials with the files included on the disk.
I started with Learning Autodesk 3ds Max Design Essentials but I found this to be a bit rubbish and so learnt with a combination of online tutorials on YouTube and this book. Book arrived in perfect condition, but the product itself is a waste of time.
Essentially is a manual for the program in question, which is provided free by autodesk anyway. Lots of references to CD content which was difficult to get given that the book was a Kindle download.
